SAFE and SOUND

A gentle way to learn to feel safe again.

WITH THE PROPER TRAINING...

YOU CAN HELP YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM  FEEL SAFE AGAIN

The Safe and Sound Protocol, as developed by Dr Stephen Porges,  is a passive way  to calm the  autonomic/physiological state .

A calm autonomic nervous system   is necessary for health, growth and restoration

It is the foundation of  good health  and thus of any effective therapy.

Your Nervous System is bombarded by a lot of information from both your internal and external environment at any one time. It has to make sense of this and decide if you are safe or unsafe. This will determine which polyvagal state you will be at any point in time.

Keeping the Nervous System safe is critical to support healthy development of the brain and the healing of any brain injury.

A calm autonomic nervous system   is necessary for health, growth and restoration   It is the foundation  of  good health  and thus of any effective therapy

Higher brain functions such as learning, communication, and focus are dependent upon how well we are able to process incoming information at the sensory and emotional levels.

Higher brain skills develop only  after a solid sensory and emotional foundation is set.

If  the sensory foundation isn’t fully developed, or if  emotional regulation gets shaken by life’s changes  we don’t function quite as well.

Vestibular dysfunction  an indicator of a poorly developed  or damaged sensory foundation. When this occurs, the brain uses a lot of its energy trying to maintain balance , so will not be able to invest the energy doing higher thinking skills.

The vestibular system has to do with balance and movement. It is centered in the inner ear. Each of us has vestibular organs located deep inside our ears. When we move our heads, the fluid in these organs moves and shifts, constantly providing us with information about the position of our heads and bodies in space (spatial awareness). This sense allows us to maintain our balance and to experience gravitational security: confidence that we can maintain a position without falling. The vestibular system allows us to move smoothly and efficiently. It also works right alongside all of our other sensory systems, helping us use our eyes effectively and process sounds in our environment.

When a child’s vestibular system is not functioning correctly, he may be under responsive or overly sensitive to movement. He may either need to move constantly to feel satisfied or he may be fearful of movement because it makes him feel insecure and unbalanced. He may move in an uncoordinated, clumsy manner, bumping into things, falling, and never fully walking or sitting in an upright manner.

As a result, he might have difficulty coordinating and planning motor tasks such as jumping jacks, skipping, catching a ball with two hands, or reaching across the center of his body (crossing midline), or even coordinating movements of the mouth, resulting in difficulty with speech production.

Vision is closely related to the vestibular system. When we feel balanced and centered, our eyes can move smoothly and steadily and are able to focus, track, and discriminate between objects in our environment. Difficulty with tasks that require the eyes to move left to right (e.g. reading) or up and down repeatedly (e.g. copying information from the board) may be signs of a disrupted vestibular system.

Trauma to the ear can occur as a result of an infection or from exposure to loud sounds or unsafe sounds.

It can be innocent sounds that happened in a stressful situation.

When this happens, the muscle controlling the tension of the ear drum which transmits the sound waves become damaged so that the full spectrum of sound waves do not get transmitted. Instead, only the high pitched and low pitched sounds get through.

These are associated with danger, and so the brain will interpret this input as unsafe.

INTRODUCING

THE SAFE AND SOUND PROTOCOL

This home based listening program will train your ear to hear sounds in a healthy way again so that you no longer get triggered inappropriately by auditory or visual cues.

The Safe and Sound Protocol is a five hour  intervention designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity while enhancing social engagement and resilience, the hallmarks of a calm autonomic nervous system.

The intervention uses vocal music that has been filtered to train the middle ear muscles to focus in on the frequency envelope of human speech.

Once human speech is properly perceived, the portal to social engagement has been opened.

You’ll find you are (or your child is) better able to interpret not only the meaning, but also the intent in conversations.  And the sense of safety that is achieved by better understanding the fluctuations in human voice calms your (or your child’s) physiological state.

Once your system has been primed and your state is calm, further therapy is enhanced and behavioural regulation is improved.

This makes input from the speech therapist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist a lot more effective.
